Qualities of a good supply/relief teacher

Be Present

When you enter a school make sure you are ready to work. You are not only a classroom supervisor you are a teacher. If you put in the effort each school will support you through the school day. Focus your attention to your students and be present when you interact with them.

Appropriate Dress/Hygiene

Arrive at your school showered, clean and dressed appropriately. No one likes a smelly teacher. Personal Hygiene is a very important part of your job; we all remember that one teacher with smelly clothes and bad breathe when we were students….dont let this person be you!

Be Polite and Thankful

Don’t be afraid to find the Daily Organiser, Vice Principal or Principal after school to thank them directly for the days work. If you have a good day let the School Management Team know. It’s always nice to get positive feedback; Principals are very proud people and positive feedback reflects on the job that they do in their school.

Be Prepared

Arrive prepared with your own work just in case there is no classroom schedule to follow. It’s your job to engage the students. Always search the route you are going to take the night before if you can. An ANZUK representative will always be on hand to give you directions but you need to know where you are going. The nature of Supply/Relief work means that you may be called at late notice; you still need to search your route before you leave.

Show you are Interested

Visiting different schools every week is going to mean that you will be interacting with staff members that you do not know. Make conversation in the staffroom and help where you can, you just might go home thinking you made a big difference to someone’s day!
